Frequently Asked Questions

Maps

The books "Berlin" and "Stuttgart" are for free. Why do I have to pay for the others?
First of all, you need a real travel book to test all features and see if you like our application. Since our office locations are Stuttgart and Berlin we picked these two cities in Germany. Then, even if you forget about how much resources application development an testing takes, creating, packaging, distributing and updating the books on a regular basis involves a lot of work. We think that everybody visiting a city should be able to pay for a TravelDroyd Book as much as for a cup of coffee.

Thy does the content quality differ from book to book?
We're using street maps based on OpenStreetMap without editing the content or making any additions to it. By nature, some regions are better mapped than others. The same applies for the Wikipedia content which differs by language and the number of geo-referenced content as well.

Can I share map data between MapDroyd and TravelDroyd ?
No, MapDroyd uses a totally different map file format (smd) than TravelDroyd (ebmd).

Can I share map data between NavDroyd and TravelDroyd ?
Although NavDroyd and TravelDroyd share the same MicroMap file format you can't just copy maps from one application folder to the other. TravelDroyd requires a special packaging and will not work with plain NavDroyd map files.

Navigation

TravelDroyd features routing - why don't you include navigation as well ?
Very soon we plan to release NavDroyd which is an offline navigation software for Android devices. After releasing NavDroyd we plan to integrate a navigation feature into TravelDroyd as well.

Non-free Books

Why do I have to pay for TravelDroyd books?

Just to prevent any misunderstandings: you don't pay for the map data or the Wiki content itself! You pay for the offline data packaging, regular data updates, regional cut outs, application updates, user support, and so on. This requires engineering resources on our side. The current earnings don't even cover our full hosting and server costs.

If you don't feel comfortable with this payment model you're free to use online maps and online Wikipedia content!
